Activities and Duties of the General Surgical Pathology Fellow

  1. The duties of the Fellow shall be confined to operating room consultations (frozen sections) and evaluating surgical specimens. There are no autopsy responsibilities, except as an advisor on specific cases.
  2. Normal working hours are 7:00 A.M. - 5:00 P.M. Monday through Friday and from 7:00 A.M. until the work is done on Saturday.
  3. The Fellow will be assigned to the Surgical Pathology benches at UPMC and/or its affiliate hospital for a total of nine months. The remaining three months will be devoted to electives at the Fellow's discretion.
  4. When assigned to the Surgical Pathology Bench, the responsibility of the Fellow will be mainly that of an advisor to the resident assigned to the bench. He/she will see that the resident is processing all specimens according to protocol. In the absence of a general pathology resident or during peak workloads, the Fellow will assist in grossing the specimens.
  5. The Fellow will also take part in all operating room consultations (frozen sections) pertaining to his/her Gross Bench. Responsibilities will be delegated according to the experience of the Fellow.
  6. The Fellow will also review all slides with the resident assigned to his/her Gross Bench in advance of the cases being signed out with the attending pathologist. The daily review is expected to continue throughout the entire nine months that the Fellow is assigned to the bench. Although encouraged, this duty may be relinquished during the time the Fellow is on "elective rotation".
  7. The Fellow will occasionally be asked to attend and present cases at various UPMC conferences.
  8. The Fellow will be called upon to present cases about twice a year at the Department of Pathology slide Seminar held at noon every Thursday in the UPMC Conference Center. The fellow will also be asked about once a year to present one or more interesting cases to the Pittsburgh Pathology Society.
  9. The Fellow is encouraged to pursue one or two research projects that will be suitable for publication in a peer-review journal.
