Message from the Chair

Dr. PantanowitzWelcome. I am glad you have visited our Department of Pathology website. This website offers you access to all of our outstanding divisions and allows you to learn more about our faculty, academic mission and news events.

We are respectfully at the forefront in health care and one of the largest pathology departments in the USA, comprised of modern academic centers and reputable community practices. Our department has a reputation of excellence in clinical service, research and education. We provide strong diagnostic support for our University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) facilities and contribute toward training many students at the University of Pittsburgh (Pitt) School of Medicine. While delivering on all of these missions we strive to create a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment.

The department covers every realm of pathology and laboratory medicine with extraordinary breadth and depth. We handle around 25 million pathology specimens annually, which includes around 400,000 histology and 100,000 cytology samples. Our world-class, highly skilled subspecialty teams employ cutting-edge methods that leverage modern technology to deliver outstanding and integrated clinical care for every patient we encounter. We have around 200 respected faculty and 1,200 valued employees who run our laboratories. We are proud to be research leaders in basic science and translational fields that maintain our ranking as one of the top funded institutions in the USA. Our thriving educational programs are dedicated to teaching various learner groups including residents, clinical fellows, medical students, graduate students, postdoctoral trainees and allied health care students.

Our department is well poised to practice contemporary pathology, make novel discoveries and offer innovative contributions that will transform the field, as well as train the next generation of pathologists, laboratorians and researchers. I encourage you to reach out to me if you want to join our department and help reshape medicine.
