Appropriate faculty supervisors evaluate each fellow monthly for the first three months and bi-annually thereafter. Throughout the year, the fellow's diagnostic skills are monitored by direct interaction at the sign out microscope. With sufficient repetition and re-exposure to the diverse clinical material that passes thru our division, all of our past fellows have become quite proficient in interpretation of allograft biopsies within a few months. Fellows can make use of appropriate self study sets to accelerate their learning. Annotated study sets for all areas of solid organ transplantation pathology are available in the division. Teaching performance is assessed by evaluation forms filled out by medical students at the end of the course. Research productivity is measured in terms of the number of abstracts submitted, presentations made and manuscripts published. Once the fellow completes the program, an Annual Follow-up Form keeps track of his/her academic appointments, clinical or laboratory research accomplishments, and grant funding. Any problems or concerns identified during the evaluation process are shared with the fellow. Every reasonable attempt is made to provide the fellow with counseling, remedial help, schedule alterations, leaves of absences, etc., to accommodate his or her particular needs, while ensuring that the ACGME requirements, as well as those of the program and clinical assignment site are adequately met. If necessary, a plan for correcting any deficiencies is developed and agreed upon. If the objectives of this plan are not satisfactorily met within an appropriate time frame, recommendations for corrective action, including possible dismissal or probation, are considered by the Director of the Training Program, and appropriate advisory committees.
Grievance and Appeal: Each fellow receives a copy of the Grievance and Appeal Policy and Procedure with orientation to the program. Questions may be brought to the Program Director.
