The Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) in Cellular and Molecular Pathology (CMP-SURP) is designed to provide stimulating and rewarding research opportunities for undergraduates throughout the world who are considering graduate education in the Biomedical Sciences. The program is sponsored and administered by the Cellular and Molecular Pathology Graduate Program at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine (SOM). The University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine is a premier biomedical research center and provides an excellent opportunity and environment for students to gain research experience under the mentorship of internationally recognized scientists and clinicians.
The goal of this program is to provide students the opportunity for a hands-on research experience. Each student conducts an independent research project with the guidance from a carefully selected faculty member. At the end of the ten-week program, the student presents his/her research to members of the department at a Research Presentation Day. The Cellular and Molecular Pathology undergraduate program combines both basic science and clinical research to explore fundamental questions related to the biology of normal cellular growth and differentiation, as well as the cellular and molecular pathways leading to human diseases.
The CMP program combines both basic science and clinical research to explore fundamental questions related to the biology of normal cellular growth and differentiation, as well as the cellular and molecular pathways leading to human diseases. Our faculty explore many facets of human disease, with active programs in cancer research, molecular genetics, neurodegenerative diseases, transplantation, gene therapy, and molecular diagnostics. Interested undergraduate students will need to complete a SURP application form, provide a personal statement describing their research interests and career goals, submit an unofficial transcript from the student's undergraduate institution, and obtain two letters of recommendation from a faculty member(s) and/or a mentor familiar with the student's academic performance. Additional funding for housing and travel may also be available.
