The Histotechnology School of UPMC - Objectives and Competencies

At the completion of the 10.5-month program, students will have achieved the objectives set forth by the Histotechnology School of University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. The graduate of the Histotechnology School will assume the role of a competent histotechnologist in an autonomous practice by:

  • Being able to recognize and apply technical principles and methods
  • Utilizing scientific knowledge along with acquired technical skills
  • Applying problem-solving techniques to identify and correct technical and procedural errors and/or instrument malfunction
  • Utilizing critical thinking skills and communication skills in the performance of their technical duties
  • Following safety guidelines in all aspects of laboratory duties
  • Isolating and identify tissue components
  • Preparing tissue specimens for analysis (assessing, grossing, processing)
  • Performing testing procedures according to prescribed methodology
  • Performing microtomy embedding techniques and all other procedures with precision and accuracy
  • Monitoring and evaluate quality control data
  • Evaluating validity of test results
  • Taking responsible actions in regards to test validation
  • Utilizing abilities in a responsible manner
  • Using all available learning opportunities
  • Demonstrating confidentiality in professional relationships
  • Maintaining accountability to manager and employer
  • Adhering to ethico-legal and regulatory policies and rules
  • Participating in professional activities

Successful students will possess the following competencies in the areas of fixation, tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, and staining:

  • to define associated terminology
  • to properly prepare and dispose of reagents
  • to describe the principle or mechanism of reaction
  • to select appropriate methods and their controls
  • to successfully perform routine and special procedures
  • to distinguish appropriate results
  • to recognize inappropriate results or artifacts and to identify possible sources of error
  • to operate, maintain, and troubleshoot standard histology instrumentation and to monitor for quality control
  • to understand and comply with laboratory safety procedures and regulations
  • to microscopically identify tissues and basic anatomical structures
