Anisa I. Kanbour School of Cytotechnology

The Anisa I. Kanbour School of Cytotechnology was founded to meet the demand for cytotechnologists. The program's objective is to provide students with the theoretical and practical training needed for a career in cytotechnology.

Located in an academic community, the school is dedicated to excellence in education. It is one of the oldest schools of cytotechnology in the country, having been in continuous operation since 1959. It is one of only 18 accredited schools in the country and one of only two in Pennsylvania.

The education is conducted under the close supervision of experienced cytopathologists and cytotechnologists of Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC, UPMC Presbyterian, and UPMC Shadyside.

The school is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) of the American Society of Cytopathology.

Cytology is a subdivision of anatomic pathology in which close interaction takes place intradepartmentally and interdepartmentally. The staff pathologists responsible for the formal program hold academic appointments with the University of Pittsburgh.

Students receive much of the didactic and practical training from the appointed education coordinator, who also holds an academic appointment with University of Pittsburgh. In addition, students also benefit from the experience of staff cytotechnologists at each of the three institutions they rotate through. Each laboratory employs a supervising cytotechnologist and laboratory support personnel.
