Autopsy Discovery Program

The Autopsy Discovery Program provides medical students with an opportunity to participate in a medical autopsy with the UPMC Autopsy Director and UPMC Pathology residents. The goal of the program is for medical students to experience the actual practice of pathology and to gain a better understanding of the process of the medical autopsy. Students will learn hands-on gross examination techniques used in medical autopsies. Samples taken by students during the procedure will then be reviewed on H&E stained slides with the Autopsy Director and the findings, along with gross and microscopic photographs and background information, will be presented at poster session in the spring. Posters will be judged by residents, fellows and faculty in the UPMC Department of Pathology, and the winners will receive awards. Please view photos and contact Dr. Tanner Bartholow with questions.
