Stephen F. Badylak, DVM, PhD, MD

Dr. Badylak is a Professor, Department of Surgery; Professor, Department of Bioengineering; Deputy Director, McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine.

Clinical Expertise

Dr. Badylak practiced primary care and sports medicine for sixteen years and served as the head Team Physician for Purdue University during this tenure. Dr. Badylak has practiced both veterinary and human medicine, and is now fully engaged in research. He began his academic career at Purdue University in 1983, and subsequently held a variety of positions including service as the Director of the Hillenbrand Biomedical Engineering Center from 1995-1998.

ResearchExpertise

The Badylak laboratory is focused upon the development and clinical translation of biologic scaffolds for functional tissue reconstruction. There is a heavy emphasis upon the interdisciplinary and translational aspects of regenerative medicine. All studies of bioscaffold remodeling, including those investigating the host innate immune response, gene transcription of responding cells, metabolic pathways, and the molecular effectors of cell phenotype are conducted with the end point of patient care in mind. Our studies involve several forms of biologic scaffolds which typically are composed of xenogenic mammalian extracellular matrix; including whole organ 3-dimensional scaffolds derived by organ decellularization. Genetic profiling, proteomics, cell matrix interactions, in-vitro cell culture, biomechanical testing, preclinical animal studies, and human clinical studies are actively pursued in the laboratory (Dr. Badylak is currently the PI on two active clinical trials focused upon esophageal reconstruction and skeletal muscle reconstruction). The laboratory is interdisciplinary by design and therefore close communication among all members of the research team is vital to success. The laboratory consists of approximately 6 staff scientists, 4 - 5 postdoctoral fellows, 5 predoctoral students (including about 50% MD/PhD students), 3 - 5 undergraduate students, a technical support staff, and an administrative support staff. All members of the laboratory are keenly aware of meeting milestones and all are exposed to a productive mixture of industry sponsored research and federally funded basic science research. Interest in the utilization of biologic scaffolds, including the preparation and characterization of such scaffolds, spans more than 25 years in the Badylak laboratory. More than ten million patients have been treated with bioscaffolds developed in Dr. Badylak's laboratory
