Bone and Soft Tissue Pathology

Mission Statement

The Bone and Soft Tissue Center of Excellence is based at UPMC Shadyside Hospital and receives over 5000 specimens and consultations a year. The COE is committed to providing excellence in clinical service, education, and research. Drs. John, Naous, and Schoedel provide skilled interpretation of neoplastic and non-neoplastic diseases of bone and soft tissue. In-house ancillary studies are utilized extensively and include immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization, cytogenetics, and molecular studies. As part of a multidisciplinary team, members of the COE work alongside colleagues from Orthopedic Surgery, Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, and Musculoskeletal Radiology to ensure the highest quality of patient care. The research mission of the COE is focused on clinicopathological and molecular characterization of bone and soft tissue tumors and the detection of biomarkers that can be used clinically for diagnosis, prognostication, and treatment of bone and soft tissue sarcomas. The one-year ACGME accredited Bone and Soft Tissue Pathology Fellowship provides comprehensive diagnostic bone and soft tissue pathology training.
