The fellowship includes educational experiences in the following specific areas: non-gynecological cytopathology, gynecological cytopathology, exfoliative and aspiration cytology, cytopreparation, flow cytometry, molecular diagnostics, cytogenetics, histology, immunohistochemistry, and laboratory management and decision making. During the fellowship, the fellow is expected to actively participate in a variety of cytopathology teaching conferences. The fellow is also expected to participate in the informal and more formal teaching of medical students, residents, and cytotechnology students. He/she will also interact with clinicians, radiologists, surgeons, oncologists, and other interested clinicians. Fellows are expected to undertake at least one investigational project and are strongly encouraged to present their research at national meetings. The nature of the project will depend on the fellow's interest, and the amount of time they wish to devote to it.
Conferences include a cytopathology conference (weekly), a cytology book club/board review conference (monthly), and other departmental AP or CP oriented conferences. Fellows will also take advantage of multiple interactive electronic, web-based resources to access information, including laboratory information systems, virtual slides and web cases, on-line radiology image resources, and literature searches. The weekly cytopathology conference covers a variety of important topics that are presented by fellows, faculty, and outside faculty via the American Society of Cytopathology Teleconference series. This includes a rotation of Cytology Grand Rounds (quality assurance, interesting case conference), journal clubs, didactic sessions (by fellows and faculty), and teleconferences. Each conference is followed by an interactive question and answer session with the speaker and all connecting sites via teleconferencing. Additional educational material is available online via the shared folder that contains prior teleconferences, fellow conferences, and other educational materials for use by fellows. Numerous study sets, including cytology-histology correlation cases, and online cases of interest are also available and widely used to supplement the educational experience.
