Breast/GYN Pathology Clinical Instructor Responsibilities

General Responsibilities

Trainees are given graduated responsibility regarding case review, work up, dictation, and sign-out. Trainees are assigned to services with attending pathologists who sign out the cases during the first part of the year. As they are deemed ready, trainees are granted sign-out privileges and the assigned attending provides support and back-up as needed.

Trainees are expected to demonstrate proficiency in gross examination at the beginning of the instructorship. Subsequently, trainees collaborate with pathology assistants as needed to ensure optimal gross examination of specimens.

Trainees present at the weekly breast and GYN multidisciplinary conferences on a rotating basis. In addition, they present monthly at the clinical instructor/fellow's conference (journal club/case presentation style) and teach medical students as needed (approximately 3 hours per year). Clinical Instructors are also expected to present at departmental grand rounds.

Work Schedule Expectations

Routine Work Week

The routine work schedule is 8:00am through 5:00pm, Monday through Friday. It may be necessary to be at work earlier or to remain later as frozen section, sign-out service, or teaching requires.

Scheduled Time Off (Vacations, Meetings)

Trainees have 20 days of paid time off for discretionary and sick day use as well as up to 10 days of meeting time to be used for conferences, professional meetings, and interviews. Time off is scheduled as early as possible and requests are made in writing to and approved by the Chief of Pathology.

Night and Weekend Call

Trainees are assigned call for AP services for approximately one week every other month. Weekday call coverage runs from 5:00pm through 7:00am Monday through Thursday. Weekend call coverage runs from 5:00pm Friday through 7:00am Monday. Apart from late operating completion times - sometimes up to 9:00pm - it is very infrequent that trainees are called in for frozen section. Trainees are always assigned a back-up attending for assistance as needed.
